Mystical Stitching with Christi Johnson
Join fiber artist and author Christi Johnson of Mixed Color for a sweet 3 part series exploring embroidery for personal liberation and collective healing.
Where: Online, live via zoom
When: Sundays Nov 14th, 21st, and 28th 3-4 pm (EST)
Class one: Meditation and Intention
In the first class, we will take a moment to get to know each other and connect with other kindred spirits. Christi will then lead us through a meditation focusing on connecting with the natural world and bringing that connection into your craft. Christi’s unique approach to art invites us to see our own artistic practice--whether that’s a professional art practice, or simply noticing the world around us--as a magical ritual. As Christi says in her latest book, Mystical Stitches, “You’re invited to embrace everything from beauty to sadness, express through fibers the grace found in accepting what is, and explore future possibilities of personal transformation.” Christi explains that there is mind-altering magic available through engaging in your own creative pursuits. This personal liberation through slow craft and creative expression is what we’ll be exploring during this course. We will then set an intention for our creative time together and gather inspiration for the next class.
Class two: Learning the Stitches
In the second class, Christi will lead us through a basic lesson in embroidery. She will demonstrate a series of introductory straight stitches such as; backstitch, split stitch, stem stitch, running stitch, seed stitch, ray stitch, and star stitch. These stitches will set you on your way towards your own meditative practice and expressing your own living myth through symbolism created with fiber and thread.
Class three: Sharing
In this final class, we will come together one last time to share our work and observations both spiritual and practical. This is also a time to ask Christi any about any techniques or technical questions that arose as you practiced your embroidery.
What you’ll need:
Fabric - High-quality natural fibers such as muslin, denim, raw silk, broadcloth, chambray, cotton canvas, or linen. Make sure to choose a woven (non-stretchy) fabric that is thick enough that you cannot see through it easily but loose enough to pass an embroidery needle through without forcing it.
Thread - Any kind of embroidery thread such as Perle cotton, embroidery floss, or sashiko
Needle - Any needle labeled embroidery or crewel.
Embroidery hoop (optional)
// This class is part of a series involving our Community Quilt Project. We invite you to join others in creating a unique naturally-dyed patchwork quilt. We envision an heirloom quilt infused with the colors of many landscapes and the embroidery of many hands. Many of us have spent the past several years isolated, siloed with individual losses and grief. A communal quilt is an opportunity to invite healing. Individual quilt squares can carry the healing that comes from joining with others for a purpose, the healing that comes from intentional and slow handwork, and the healing that comes from creating beauty out of the ordinary natural materials in our lives. See details here. //
* If cost is a barrier for you to take this workshop, please get in touch and we’ll work something out.
