Dwelling as Belonging - Online Writing Workshop with Kelsey Sather
What does it mean to live in a place? This seemingly simple question reveals complex relationships, intricate belief systems, subtle and not-so-subtle tensions. At its heart, the question of dwelling is one of the human (animal) desire to belong.
Through this online workshop, you’ll explore various places of dwelling—from the personal body to the public planet. Where do we come from, and how do our origins shape our understanding of home? What does dwelling look and feel like in theory and in practice? How do we shape the places we reside, and how do our places of residence shape us?
The primary goal of this creative writing workshop is for participants to leave with new material and techniques to continue writing from a place of authenticity, curiosity, and play.
No writing experience is necessary!

About the instructor:
Kelsey lives in her hometown of Bozeman, Montana. Her stories explore the complexities of human-nature relationships around the world. While an author of nonfiction essays for over a decade, fantasy remains her first and true love. BIRTH OF THE ANIMA, a finalist for the National Indie Excellence Award in fantasy, is her first novel.
She received an MA in Environmental Humanities from the University of Utah, where she attended on fellowship. The resulting collection of essays from her studies, Pulling Up Beets, examines sustainable and equitable food systems at high elevations.
At the University of Montana, she received High Honors in Creative Writing and Environmental Studies. Her thesis assessing the impacts of the U.S.-Peruvian Free Trade Agreement on Amazonian tribes earned a Davidson Honors College scholar distinction.
After teaching at the university level, Kelsey co-managed a writers’ collective for four years, where she facilitated creative writing workshops for all ages. She still leads the occasional workshop on the craft of storytelling.
Creative Writing meets Advocacy:
For our advocacy focus, we are thrilled to include two representatives from the Greater Yellowstone Coalition — an organization that works with all people to protect the land, waters, and wildlife of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. In this interview, we discuss ways you can effectively advocate for our local ecosystem using your own personal stories.
